Why owning a Venue Styling business can make you happy

An article I read recently in Forbes really struck a chord with me.  It was talking about what really makes us happy at work, and every point mentioned applies to owning your own venue styling business!

So what are the 5 things that can make you happy in your work? And could this perhaps be the perfect job or side hustle for you?

1. Feeling valued and trusted

Feeling valued and trusted is most definitely at the top of the list.  We all want to feel valued and trusted in our everyday lives, and we spend a high proportion of our lives at work.

In the corporate workplace many employees don’t feel entirely trusted to do their job.  We’ve certainly worked in the past for managers who aren’t able to fully let go and give you the freedom to make your own choices about how you do your job.  It can feel frustrating and stifling to have decisions made for you.

As a business owner of course, you have complete control over how, when and where you work, as well as who you work with.  Furthermore, working in the events industry, often on life events, clients have to be able to put their trust in you to get it right first time.

2. Making a difference

Venue styling clearly makes a difference at every event.

We’ve all been to events which feel a bit “meh” and this is often due to the surroundings.

Parties in rooms quite clearly designed for conferences, walls covered with notices and remnants of sticky fixer, and venues that just look a little jaded are just a few examples.

Similarly, you’ve probably come across settings which are beautiful in their own right, but feel too large for the numbers attending or too light to really get the party going.

Whether dressing elements of a room, creating a set piece or transforming an entire venue,  you will be making an impact for that specific event.  And, knowing that you’re making a difference with your work, can be incredibly satisfying.

The impact is cumulative too.  As event work predominantly means working alongside other suppliers, you’ll receive even more satisfaction when you see the results of all your combined efforts.

Ultimately, of course, it’s the client who counts and, by making a difference to their event, you will be giving them satisfaction and adding to their own happiness too.

3. Working for people who care

In some walks of life it can be easy to feel that the people you work for don’t really care.  Many jobs are seen as a means to an end, to pay the bills and edge you just that tiny bit closer to retirement.

Managers too can sometimes be guilty of caring more about their own careers than those of their staff.  It’s human nature, after all, to be competitive and they may not give you the recognition you deserve if they feel threatened.

In our industry, each event is important to the end client.  In many instances, it may be a particularly high spend item for them.  If it’s celebrating a life event, then it may carry a substantial element of emotion too, especially if the event is a one-off.

These people really care about how you perform.  They are interested in what you are doing and how you are doing it.  Having that level of interest, interaction and accountability really can make you feel valued in your job.

4. A sense of belonging

As a venue stylist you’ll almost inevitably be working as part of a team.

Venues, caterers, florists, entertainers and other suppliers will often be working alongside you, and all of you will have a vested interest in the services the others are providing.

It’s quite possible, and likely, that you’ll be liaising with each other before an event too.  Calls, planning meetings and site visits will no doubt be taking place to co-ordinate layouts, technical specifications, colour schemes and styles.

And there are many other opportunities within the events industry to network and collaborate.  You may choose to join forces with other stylists or suppliers for a styled shoot.  Or, you may share stock or resources with industry colleagues in order to service larger events.

Our community-lead training and mentoring programme specifically endorses collaboration over competition.

5. Learning and growth

Collaborating also gives us more opportunities to learn from each other and to grow our skills sets, as well as our businesses.

Trends come and go, patterns shift and legislation changes but, after nearly 30 years in business, we still find ourselves learning every day.

Being a business owner means you have to move with the times.  Learning new skills and becoming more proficient and experienced in what you do can definitely lead to a greater level of job satisfaction and returns.
